I'm in shock this book was even published. All the characters run around like headless chickens.Toby spends the entire book doing nothing, reacting to things, basically not thinking through what's going on at any time and failing, which is not suprising since there isn't a single example of detective work to be seen anywhere in this entire book.I have no idea whatsoever why would Sylvester ever ask Toby to do anything since the only thing she seems to excel at is saying how she's the expert, doing nothing to even remotedly prove that she is such a thing and then failing massively.Toby treated Jan like Jan was stupid and I personally saw no indication other than prejudice to come to that conclusion. And may I add, we wondered for half a book why the Night Hunts wouldn't come for the bodies until JAN wondered "Why?". Awesome detective work there Toby, not only did you fail to actually DO any detective work, you didnt even ASK the right questions. She scorned Jan for being distressed by the dead of her close friends, employees and subjects to then lose her entire shit a few chapters later infront of her ONLY responsability, Quentin. What a fucking hypocrite. The entire thing with Alex/Terry (I'm not saying *spoiler allert* because the only person that needed that was Toby, for the rest of the average IQ world, it was obvious from the start) was borderline offensive.Basically the book presented the guilty of the crime by killing everybody else that could be responsible, and using the same reasons to prove who were and weren't quilty for all the characters until we got to "oh, right, the bad people don't care about those reasons".On a side note, it doesn't matter how much you knew a guy before he got married, how arranged that marriage was, or how unlikable his wife is, you're still cheating. You're still on the wrong. Period. Brain Candy. This book has a fair amount of critisicm about the mystery component, and meh, the characters are so compelling I don't really care too much thier mystery has a few obvious holes. It's a case of the reader knows more, but we all know Toby is a smart enough grrl to have noticed some of the things she was missing, so it's a bit hard to forgive her for missing some of them. I'm going to put it down to she was wearing Tybalt's leather jacket. The CAT KING's jacket. How could she not be distracted?Toby has clearly done some growing up since the last book, she's not half as self-centered as she was before the Winterrose pulled her back into the faerie world. I like our fiesty heroine ever so much more now (even if I was occasionally screaming at her to think in this episode). The world itself - well I'm a sucker for faerie mythos, so I love it. Damn you McGuire - you are going to make me read all 13+ of these aren't you? :) As if my to-read list wasn't long enough already.
