Miranda Kenneally has managed to write one of the most judgmental, uptight Christian characters in the history of YA in Kate. And to be honest, the depiction of Kate wasn't far off from some of my evangelical Christian compatriots from my high school years. I liked that much of this book was about challenging the narrow-minded ways of the character. The guilt over aiding Emily's abortion was something real -- and an event that I feel like much of the country would struggle with (given Gallop polls, etc.) I particularly liked the afterword where Kenneally explains why she shaped the plot in the way that she did. It's a flawed book (like many in this series), but the message about dialogue and understanding multiple viewpoints is valuable in this increasingly didactic world. This is a good book.I actually loved this book, I did, but sometimes I really felt like I couldn't connect with the main character, Kate. She got on my nerves throughout most of the book because she seemed nice at times, but very judgmental of other people, not understanding that not everyone has the same beliefs as her. She was just annoying sometimes! I won't spoil this book for everyone else. And sometimes, she was a little outspoken (however, there is nothing wrong with that). Don't get me wrong, this was a very nice read and I have added it to my favorite books list. :)Give it a try!
