While this multi-layered story does have glimpses of romance, it is most definitely not a romance. What it is however, is a roller coaster ride of emotions, full of flawed, damaged characters, secrets, family, unresolved issues; in short, life. The author uses the writing technique of flashbacks quite well. Painful subjects are addressed and not glossed over, but often the author gives the reader enough information to draw his/her own conclusions. The pacing of the story moves well, the characters are definitely well outlined and three dimensional, the setting well drawn, the dialogue appropriate and realistic, and the mystery well plotted and not easily discerned. My emotional involvement was high and my investment in the outcome of the story was high as well. The ending was satisfying, if not happily ever after. Again, we draw our own conclusions.*I received my copy from NetGalley.com in exchange for an honest review Jenelle Decker was always a relatively happy child until her father left and her mother remarried. She became rebellious and acted out in ways her mother couldn't handle. So she went to her grandmothers to live with her. Now, many years later, a single mother to her 12 year old son, Bennett, Janelle receives a call from an uncle she rarely sees. Her grandmother is ill and they wanted her to come and stay with her as she refuses any nurses to come to her and they were all too busy with their own lives. So Janelle packs up with Bennett in tow. Beside her Grannys house is the Tierney household where Gabe and his 2 twin brother were raised. Janelle and Gabe have a history and she noticed that Gabe and one of the twins, Andy still reside there with the grumpy and abusive father. As Gabe and Janelle begin to reconnect, Gabe suddenly turns on her and end what they tried to rekindle. But what Janelle learns of their pasts, is far more difficult than she can comprehend and finally begins to understand some very disturbing facts.

Well written but too slow. No surprises. I knew what was going to happen from the get go.
