Realmente me gustó mucho este libro. Me sorprendió porque no es lo usual en el género de romance histórico y el cambio fue gratamente recibido.El libro nos cuenta la vida de Millie que es una chica sumisa y obediente con una familia sin título pero con grandes riquezas. Pero el anhelo de su padre es integrar sangre noble a la familia, por lo cual busca el mejor postor para casar a su hija, y ese mejor postor siempre viene acompañado de títulos pero grandes deudas.Aquí llega nuestro protagonista, conocido como Fitz, que está locamente enamorado de una amiga de la infancia y que le ha hecho promesas de amarla siempre y estar juntos. Pero las deudas de su título recién adquirido lo están forzando a algo no planeado y no querido. Millie, sin embargo, siempre estuvo preparada para el momento en el cual su vida sería inexorablemente unida a la de un viejo noble por dinero, pero nunca esperó a un apuesto joven de diecinueve años como esposo. E irremediablemente, se enamoró de él. El libro nos relata su historia como pareja y las dificultades que ambos superaron, los obstáculos de un matrimonio sin amor y el lazo fuerte de la amistad y el conocimiento que creció entre ambos. Si bien, Fitz nunca deja de anhelar a Isabella (su amor de la infancia) sigue adelante con su esposa y amiga, con la cual hizo un pacto de no compartir lecho hasta que se cumpliera un lapso de ocho años. Por lo tanto el libro divide sus capítulos entre fragmentos del pasado y del presente, dejando al lector inmerso en fuertes ansias de conocer qué sucederá con ambos. Si bien al cabo de un tiempo, el amor de Fitz por Isabella estaba algo tedioso, creo que la autora supo manejar bien la situación para no hastiar aún más al lector. Así que puedo decir que fue tolerable, aunque debo admitir que dichas situaciones en los libros, para mí, no son fáciles de leer. En lo personal, creo que estando en el lugar de Millie me hubiese sumergido en la amargura, pero su personaje es fuerte, inteligente, creativo y nunca deja de esperar por su esposo. Pacientemente. I have ambivalent feelings about this book.Ms Thomas is a very accomplished writer. And it is evident that her plotting and character development are very well done.Millie is an heiress. At a very young age, she is married to a man who not only does not care for her, but actively is in love with another woman.Fitz is in love with Isabelle and the only reason he married Millie was for money. He needs money in order to restore his family’s fortunes to their former glory.The fact that they share so many interests never seems to occur to him. They both want to return his family estate to the beauty of the past. That will be done with her money. Together they develop a plan to take charge of her late father’s business interests. This will allow them to continue to be wealthy on Millie’s inheritance. But, Fitz never seems to realize any of this.For me, looking at this story with 21st century values this story makes me want to scream. Seeing a woman continually accept being a doormat in her marriage makes me wonder about the romance of a story. Accepting the other woman into her home for a heart to heart seems to me to be over the top even for a doormat.Fitz does not seem to think of Millie as a wife he can love until the last few pages of the book. That just made me sad, it did not make me think of romance.Ms Thomas is a very talented author, and I will seek another book by her just so I can enjoy the characters she creates and truly admire her writing.I won this book in a contest with the hope I would give a fair and honest review.
