About book Vyhrajte Boj O štíhlé Tělo – Má Osobní Tajemství Jednoduchého, Rychlého A Trvalého Zhubnutí (2013)

I actually like the premise of this book - that it is the culmination of lots of good habits/practices in all areas of life that help you get and maintain a healthy, slim body but as I am already on a weight loss journey I found I was not given enough credit for things I was doing well already. Other criticisms are that it is largely targeted at gym bunnies that like weights (in the exercise department - I run 5 times a week and didn't get much credit for this) and the BIG criticism is when Michaels criticises vegetarianism on page 22 stating that the key to a healthy diet is eating meat and not cutting out any food groups. Whilst I acknowledge that there are unhealthy vegetarians/vegans who eat a lot of junk food this would equally apply to meat eaters (eating meat does not guarantee your diet is healthy at all). I also found this highly offensive as many people are vegetarian for religious/ethical reasons and cut meat products for reasons "bigger than ourselves". As a vegetarian for over 22 years I find it unhelpful to simply state I need to start eating meat to have a healthy diet - 1950s "meat and 3 veg" advice. Particularly when there are countless studies (and the World Health Organisation) advocating the health benefits of vegetarianism. But, these criticisms aside there is some very interesting and useful stuff in here and I have passed it on to my husband to read. So, it is a mixed review but useful for its nuggets of wisdom (page 22 aside). This book could have earned 4 stars from me if Jillian had used different language. I'm not complaining about her informality or her punchiness--that's her style. But IMO the tone of this book crosses the line from health promoting to fat phobic. Jillian's cringing toward even tiny amounts of weight gain could trigger an eating disorder in a vulnerable person. As a naturopathic physician, I would like to comment on her tips on herbs. She stated that dandelion tea was good for the liver and kidneys. While that's true, it's important to know that the mineral-rich leaves of dandelion are diuretic for the kidneys, while the bitter root stimulates cholecystokinin from the liver. Her section on "Siberian ginseng" is very confusing. She switches back and forth between "Siberian ginseng" and "ginseng," and I can't tell which one she's talking about. They are completely different plants. Because they are completely different plants, the FDA no longer allows the word "Siberian ginseng" on packaging. It's now called eleuthero. Both eleuthero and ginseng have blood sugar lowering and energy improving properties, but I thought it was important to mention that they are different plants. Ginseng is a bit stronger and more expensive. Eleuthero gives more general endurance than an energy boost, and it's cheaper.
