Well, this didn't live up to my expectations. After reading such strongly opinionated reviews, I expected something more... well, just more. Most of the reviews either absolutely hated it or totally loved it. And usually, books that create such strong feelings, whether positive or negative, are controversial and have deep meanings, or life lessons. The great reviews rave about how this is one of the best paranormal romances to date. That's their opinion, and based on the story line alone, I can't argue with it because we're all entitled to our own opinions. But I can say that it's a fact that an editor (or a better editor) was desperately needed and the spelling/grammar mistakes were so numerous that I kept getting pulled out of the story to reread a sentence or paragraph to try and figure out what it was actually supposed to be saying. That doesn't make the greatest book ever for me. Then there's a ton of reviews calling this novel a horror story and disgust about satanic practices. I'm not sure where that came from actually. There's no devil worshipping going on whatsoever in the novel. Maybe they're referring to the rituals that several reviewers have called stupid and unrealistic (these Feral Warriors are all about sexual healing). In current times, that does come off as a little weird and off the wall. However, Native Americans used to have many rituals of a sexual nature, and some of them were out-right orgies for the purpose of spiritual cleansing (I do have to admit that my spirit feels pretty darn good after sex. lol) If you're curious about that, look it up online, or if you want examples of the Indian rituals in an entertaining format, read the trilogy "It Sleeps in Me", "It Dreams in Me", and "It Wakes in Me". I forget who the author is but some sexual rituals are used in the novels with author's notes in the back referencing the actual rituals in history. And Native Americans are not devil worshippers, so a sex for cleansing or healing isn't a satanic practice, nor is it unrealistic. Anyway, because of all these rave reviews and outraged reviews, I expected a heck of a story. I didn't really expect to like it, but it intrigued me nonetheless. The other times I saw such opposing views, it was in the Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon and the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward, both of which I love, and can always find a deeper meaning beyond the surface story. You know what this was? It's an okay, middle of the road, paranormal romance about a group of shifters who fight with Mages (so there's some violence), and they believe sex fixes anything (as do 90% of all males. lol.) The plot itself is original and I can see why it's popular, even though I don't ever see it being a favorite of mine. And, as I stated earlier, it would be easier to enjoy if the editing was better. Overall, it is not the horror blended with erotica novel with some deeper meaning that I expected. If you're squeamish about violence, don't read it. If you are uncomfortable reading about exhibitionist sex, don't read it. If you're looking for a book that is believable, don't read it (and for that matter don't read ANY paranormal romances). And finally, if you're looking for grammatical perfection, don't read it. For everyone else who is a fan of paranormal romance, I say go ahead and add it to your "to be read" list. I've kept the remainder of the series on my TBR list, although it is, admittedly, near the bottom. I received a copy of this from Goodreads in return for an honest review of the book. The story is about an ordinary woman, Kara, who is taking care of her sick mother. She struggles everyday trying to make ends meet, and her mother knows it. One night Kara is taken from her house by a man called Lyon. He says that she is the key to his race's survival. She doesn't believe him at first, and tries to run away, but she returns eventually because danger lurks nearby, and she knows that Lyon can protect her. The story progresses and I know I'm not giving any details, but I think that if I were to delve more into the story then there wouldn't be anything left for you to read. There are a lot of trials that Kara has to go through, and trust has to be earned. Kara learns to be the "radiant," and in the end I'm glad that she got her HEA. That's all that I look for in a story, and I'm happy with this book's outcome. I really liked the book. It was like nothing I've ever read before, and I appreciate that. The story was well-written, and the characters were memorable. Some of the scenes were really funny, and some were hard to read through, but I did enjoy it. Sometimes I kind of knew what was going to happen, and I do like that in some books. I normally don't enjoy guessing games, so it was nice to be able to guess correctly some of the time. I did not foresee some things, but I'm glad that everything worked out in the end.
