This is now one of my all time favourite series - and I haven't even read the third yet!Rhys is a huge, hulking man, who has spent the last twelve years trying to die in battle. He considers his good luck a curse. The reasons for his death wish are many, but stem from a fight with his abusive father which causes the horse barn to burn (killing horses) and results in the family leaving their village, which devastates the economy. Rhys decides to return and the first scene of the book has him meeting Meredith, now an innkeeper, as she bashes bottles over men's heads to stop them from fighting. It's love at first sight for him - although its not really first sight, as she is the horsemaster's daughter from before.The way Rhys learns he deserves to be loved, and how Meredith teaches him, is lovely and beautiful. I think one of the best scenes ever is when she discovers he is ticklish. He has never been touch just for fun, and it just about made me cry. I almost don't know what to say. I'm a fan of Tessa Dare. I've enjoyed her historicals and I was looking forward to this next book in the Stud Club story. But this book was almost painful to listen to. Even the fabulous Rosalyn Landor's narration may have added to my discomfort. Her interpretation of Rhys' voice made him seem always grumpy and curt. I don't know if I would have understood him to be that way if I were reading the words instead of listening. In any case, he was not at all likeable and I almost stopped reading. I found the story dull and the characters flat. It was very disappointing. This was a 2.5 in my opinion. Even the best author can have a bad day.
