About book The Man In The Moon (2011)

Joyce, W. (2011). The Man in the Moon. New York, NY: Atheneum Books for Young Readers. The Man in the Moon was first a baby who never had nightmares. In a great battle, the MiM (Man in the Moon), who was still a baby was orphaned and raised by moon creatures. According to the story, the Man in the Moon, is the first and original guardian of Earth's children. Over time, other guardians came to protect children- Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, etc. This story is beautifully written with intricate, detailed drawings that uses various tints and hues of blue and other earth tones. This book can be used for various ages. Young children 5-7 would love the pictures and if given to them, would create their own story. Children 8-10 would enjoy reading this story, possibly being pulled into the fantasy world of the Man in the Moon. "The Man in the Moon" by William Joyce is a beautifully written and illustrated picture book about the man who lives in the moon. The man on the moon was once a peaceful child but after his family's ship, The Moon Clipper, was attacked he is left orphaned on the moon, with only a few Moonbots, Moonmice, giant Glowworms and Lunar Moths. As the man in the moon grows up he discovers the wants and needs of the children on Earth. He establishes a band of guardians, Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, the Sandman and Mother Goose, to look over the children of Earth and keep them safe and happy.I think this book would be good for a read aloud because of the complexity of the text. The main themes in this story are love, helping others, and the innocence of childhood. You could read this book in conjunction with a lesson on one of these topics. I think it would be interesting to have the students write about a time that they made a sacrifice for someone they love, just like Nightlight did in the story. This book also includes some advanced vocabulary, specifically verbs and adjectives. I think this book would be great for doing a lesson on vocabulary, vivid verbs and adjectives because this book contains many of these that students will be able to understand and incorporate into their own writing in the future.
