The newest character to become a Guardian is Toothiana. She collects the baby teeth of children and leaves them a treasure in return. While she protects the Flying Elephant from harm she is no match for the darkness of Pitch. Together with the other Guardians, they must find Pitch, rescue Katherine, all while fighting her enemies the Monkey Army that killed her parents so long ago. The hatred the Guardians have for Pitch almost overwhelms them into forgetting their real purpose. Only Katherine believes there is still good in Pitch. Just as Nightlight is about to loose his diamond spear into Pitch's heart does Katherine step in the way. When it looks as if Katherine is about to loose the battle against the Guardians, there appears a being that has control of the elements. Mother Nature comes and takes both Pitch and Katherine away.... Joyce's telling of how these characters came to being takes the reader far beyond what they might have learned or heard about as a child. I read this earlier this year, though for some reason I never quite got around to reviewing it. In short, I enjoyed it just as much as I enjoyed the previous installments. I'm not quite as fond as Toothiana as I am the other Guardians so far, though Joyce's interpretation of the Tooth Fairy is pretty cool overall. The flashback scenes regarding some of the new characters were great and the final battle that ended on a very big cliffhanger were very exciting.
