About book The Great Paper Caper (2008)

Even after reading every other Oliver Jeffers book out there, this one still managed to surprise and tickle me. In terms of children's books that preach environmental sustainability, I prefer this story over the Lorax (and that's no slight to Dr. Seuss!). The illustrations, as always, are singular--somehow hilarious AND beautiful. Even small things, like the bear's legs, will make you grin. They are also filled with little details and visual gags that will amuse the adult reader, while the kids get absorbed in the wacky plot and vibrant colours. The illustrations in this were as amazing, colorful, spacious, and whimsical as all of Jeffers' other books. This story was about a bunch of animals (and a boy) who lived under trees in the woods. One day branches start disappearing and they mark the trees off like a crime scene and form a court to get to the bottom of it. It turned out that bear had been stealing the tree branches to make paper, which he used to make paper airplanes for a contest. I thought the plot was cute but a little too all over the place. This would be a good read for story-time, and the kids could build paper airplanes afterwards.

I would pay a lot of money for a print of the second double page spread in this book. I love it!

Not as good as I wanted it to be. Though the page with the lineup was pretty cool.
