Wow. The thing about Ladybug Girl is that she is absolutely relatable to children (and let's admit it-- to adults too). Not only that, the type-face provides clues to HOW the text should be read aloud. And you MUST read these aloud!LG (ladybug girl) anticipates a playdate with her friends and she knows "EXACTLY the way [she] want everything to be!" There's lots of imaginative outdoor play (great for the reader to dramatize), some negotiating on the part of "Bug Squad", and then LG makes a social blunder, hurting a friend's feelings. LG learns how to modify her expectations, apologize, and do her best to mend the damages.The crowd of children attending our "Teddy Bug Picnic" story time gave this book their rapt attention. October 4 was Jumpstart's Read for the Record Day to support literacy, and this year's book was Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad. I was able to read the story with three of my classes—fifth, third, and second grade. Third grade was the best. They enjoyed the story AND they were able to have a productive conversation about the importance of reading. Fifth graders felt like they were too old for the story and second graders didn't really get engaged in the discussion.The story was cute, and the illustrations were cuter. It wasn't one of my favorites, but it was good. The moral of the story felt a little underdeveloped to me, but that might just be because it was so blatantly obvious from the very first page what the moral was supposed to be. If it hadn't been the Read for the Record book, I probably never would have read it, and I don't think I would have been missing out on too much.
