Ladybug girl and bingo is a story about a little girl and a dog who are camping outdoors in a sleeping bag and tent with the little girl, LuLu’s, family. The dog, Bingo, is sniffing all over, and eventually takes off toward the woods. The dad catches bingo before he could escape and puts a leash on him. Bingo and LuLu, Ladybug girl, play all sorts of games in the woods. Then, the family goes for a hike, but LuLu loses grip of Bingo’s leash. But the brother catches Bingo before he could run away. The family then gets in a canoe, and rows across a lake as a part of their camping trip. After canoeing, the family has a picnic by the lake. LuLu and Bingo go off into the woods to play where LuLu puts Bingo’s leash on a tree branch so she could climb the tree. But, the tree branch breaks off and Bingo escapes. LuLu runs into the woods and finally finds Bingo but LuLu doesn’t know how to get back to the campsite now. LuLu and Bingo end up making it back to the family’s campsite safely where they roast marshmallows and watch the stars before falling asleep. I would provide this book as an option for my students to read in my classroom, but I would not use it in any particular lesson plan. I was attracted to this book because Bingo reminded me of my dog. While reading the book, I was wondering why Bingo kept trying to run away; it must just be a dog thing. This is so delightful! I can imagine myself picking this up when I am blue and reading it as a special treat. Children's picture books can be charming and delightful and this one is more than 5 stars worth of both. Ladybug girl is Lulu, a little girl who just happens to love insects and nature and enjoys wearing a cute ladybug costume around. One day she and her mom and dad and older brother set off with their hound dog Bingo to go on a camping trip. Lulu runs ahead with Bingo and finds a great place to set up the tent. Dad puts Bingo on a leash and warns Lulu to keep hold of the leash and not let him run off and get lost in the woods. While the adults and the brother set up camp, Lulu and Bingo explore. This is where the wonderful illustrations add so much to this story. Lulu casts spells with a gnarly old wizard (a tree that looks like one of the Ents in Lord of the Rings), rides on a galloping giant turtle (a big smooth rock) and sips tea with the buttercup fairies (butterflies) in their secret garden (flowers by a small stream). I was so enchanted by this. The family takes a canoe trip and Bingo in his life jacket looks to Lulu like a brave sea captain. This girl reminds me of my own creative imaginative self at her age. I love this girl! Unfortunately, Lulu won't let her brother hold Bingo's leash even though Bingo nearly got away and when she goes exploring with him and ties him to a branch, an excited Bingo breaks loose and runs away!!!! Now Lulu must find her beloved dog before he is lost forever. Will she? What will happen next? Read and see. Expect a gorgeously illustrated appearance from Firefly Girl. Really, adults miss out on so much by not reading children's books.
