When I saw that this was the book chosen for Read for the Record, I got a copy to send to Sophie so that she and her mom can participate. It was a cute book, but I can think of lots of others that would be a better choice. The illustrations are very lively and colorful, and I like the idea of kids dressing up as bugs, but it wasn't the most interesting of stories. Ladybug Girl is having a play date her friends, and in her mind she knows just how she wants it to go. But things don't always go as we want or expect, and when Ladybug Girl hurts the feelings of one of her friends, she must apologize and think of a way to make things better. A nice little lesson about friendship. Ladybug Girl gets together with Bumblebee Boy, Dragonfly Girl and Butterfly Girl to form the Bug Squad. They go out into the forest to visit their "Bug Squad Base." They travel over lava (grass) and deal with giants in their way (sunflowers). Each child has superpowers and they use to help get them through the forest. Finally it's time for painting and each child gets to use their imagination to paint rocks. Then it's time for cupcakes! But Ladybug Girl gets so excited that she blows out Butterfly Girls' candle while she was making a wish. Ladybug girl realizes she needs to apologize and then she has her mother relight the candle so Butterfly Girl can blow out her own candle.
