About book O Quanto Amamos (2013)

Josh Michaels who is heartbroken, lives alone after his girlfriend, Amanda takes off with a guy she meets at work, is tasked with the care of a pregnant dog named Lucy. Josh has never had a dog before and is unsure how to care for a dog, let alone a very pregnant dog. He does take her to a vet, but unfortunately due to bad nutrition all her puppies are stillborn. Someone drops off a box of new born puppies in the back of Josh's truck. He discovers the five newborn puppies just in time to save their lives. Lucy takes to the five puppies right away and adopts them as her own. Josh meets Kerri a caregiver at the local animal shelter. At first their relationship is a little rocky and at the end they are in love. Kerri helps Josh adoption all the dogs out to families except Rufus. Rufus' family never came to get him and Cody, who was born blind was returned to the shelter. Kerri returns Cody to Josh. I enjoyed this book very much. I love to read books about animals and this book along with the other W.Bruce Cameron books I have read, was just as delightful. A wonderfully light book to read on a snowy afternoon in Ohio. Attention: here is a book that is literally 95% about a single guy rescuing an abandoned pregnant dog and taking care of her and the puppies. There's no setup to learn about the guy first; it takes less than five pages before said dog is on his doorstep, and this is a small book with small pages. The dogs emerge with distinct personalities and are talked about on almost every page. The only other major plotline is the pending romance with the woman who works at the shelter -- just in case there wasn't enough cute to go around with the dogs. In fact, this would literally be a perfect book if he had gotten to keep the dog and all of her puppies, regardless of the legal limits on the number of dogs one can own. Alas, I got so attached to the puppies (and occasionally super-irritated by Kerri's pragmatism and lack of indulgent sympathy about adopting them out) that I burst into tears when they started finding new homes, and even though there's a very happy ending, it still struck a sensitive enough nerve for me to rank it 4 stars, for now.But it is very close to a perfect book.
