Louise is no ordinary chicken by any stretch of the imagination, and Kate DiCamillo does a fantastic job writing about a chicken with such personality who leaves her cozy hen house and sets out on an adventure that she has longed for and adventures is what she finds. Adventure on the high seas, adventure at the circus and adventure at a faraway bazaar. With each adventure, Louise finds herself homesick and always heads back home where the other hens are always excited to see her and wait eagerly to hear about her latest adventure.The illustrations by Harry Bliss are full of bold colors, contrast and shadows. Each illustration is full of details and such depth that I found myself right there in the story with Louise. I believe this story would be engaging for grade level one through four. I believe students will enjoy the humorous illustrations as well as the story. I enjoyed Louise as the fluffy chicken who yearns for adventure but is just a bit naive. This is a picture book that has more text than the usual picture book, including chapters, which makes it ideal for an older child or reluctant reader. The illustrations are wonderful and fit perfectly with Louise's story. There are even a few French phrases sprinkled throughout adding to the exotic nature of the chicken's adventures. My 8 year old son enjoyed the book also, particularly the adventures and the pictures.
