Carly Phillips' latest book is a charming, if predictable story. The elements of a great romance novel are all present: the octogenarian grandmother is appropriately spunky, the hero perfectly sexy yet humble, the heroine quirky yet like-able, and the plot driven by mystery and intrigue; however, one can't help but feel that Phillips is holding back. Though the characters are charmingly imperfect, the reader is told of their emotional issues, rather than discovering them en route. This book definitely gets better as it gets rolling, but the side-references to characters from Phillips' other books almost gives one the impression that this is a book written for those who are already fans, rather than for those looking for a new favorite author. Good story with good characters. This author always makes me laugh.Smiles.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------SpoilerNote to Self:Sam Cooper (“Coop,”crime reporter,divorced,neighbor1,pal,aspiring mystery writer)+Lexie Davis (Alexis, web designer, 29yo,granddaughter,pal),Charlotte Davis(grandma,ex-thief,widow,79yo,neighbor, pal1),Sylvia Krinksy (Jew,pal1,ex-thief,neighbor),Claudia Milne(computer genius,24yo,pal),Ricky Burnett(retired thief, jewelry store owner, dad),Anna Burnett(daughter),Jack Cooper(dad, retired cop, widower, bar owner),Matt Cooper(bro, cop)+Olivia,Sara Rios(cop,pal,neighbor1,ex-partner),Rafe Mancuso(cop,ex-partner),Margaret D(sis)+Stan,Cary Grant Davis(her dad, banker)+Caroline(her mom).
