About book Este Alce Es Mío (2013)

The book follows a young boy named Wilfred, who in his adventures comes across a moose. He decides to name the moose Marcel, and that the moose would be his pet. Along with being his pet, he gives the moose a set of rules that as a pet, he should follow and perform. Throughout the book, we hear about how Marcel performs and follows these rules, and also a plot twist in the center of the book. I really enjoyed reading this book. It was funny, cute, artistically well done, and has a unique plot that would intrigue kids and older ages as well. The plot is unique in the way that most pets that kids read about people owning are the normal kind; a dog, a cat, a bird, etc. A moose is unique and it also is something that you only find in the wild. With the ending of the book, it teaches kids that you may want to own something that is wild in nature, but you can't really own them because they are a wild animal. Following the plot of the book, it was interesting and engaging. It also managed to make me chuckle on more than one occasion, so I can see where it would be amusing to a child reading the book. The illustrations through the book are an intriguing mix of simple and complex. The boy himself and the moose in the story are more simply drawn, with pastel type colors. However, the background and surroundings, are all very detailed. The forest, mountains, rivers, and all the other nature things surrounding them are drawn in a way that they look realistic. With the main characters looking different from the background it makes them stand out that much more and draws the focus on them. Overall it's a wonderfully done book. I love Oliver Jeffers and like his most recent book for similar reasons: uncommon story line, likable characters, vibrant illustrations, developed vocabulary, subtle humor, and creative presentation. Wilfred finds a moose and spends a good amount of time training him how to be a proper pet. Just as Marcel the moose is catching on, Wilfred discovers that the moose might not really be his. If you enjoy other books by Jeffers, you'll like this one just as much.
