3.25 starsDON'T MESS WITH TEXAS refers to the name of a P.I. agency that is run by Dallas O'Connor and his partners, Tyler and Austin. The guys were former police officers that were wrongly accused of a crime and had spent some time in jail before being found innocent. They became detectives to help others that are in a similar predicament. At the start of the story, Nikki Hunt is on hard times. She is meeting with her no-good ex-husband to get a free meal and to find out why he is continually trying to get back together. She loved him at one time but he was unfaithful and she wants to move on. Without him. They meet but before the meal is over he is found murdered. And she is the main suspect.Dallas and his brother are next door to the restaurant when everything goes down. Long story short, this contemporary chick-lit romance spans a few weeks. Dallas and Nikki fall hard for each other in a very short time. But because each of their ex-spouses did a number on them they are commitment-phobic. All along Dallas and the other guys work their darnedest to prove her innocence. There is a secondary story that concerned Dallas's brother that was mildly interesting and some humorous moments with Bud, Dallas' dog. The romance itself was OK if you can suspend your disbelief. The mild suspense made up for it. If you like this genre you will probably enjoy their story. The next book in this series is Tyler's turn to protect a woman with BLAME IT ON TEXAS. The book was good, it just moved a little slower for my taste and not enough action. Also, I have mixed feelings about the LeAnn and Tony's side story in the book. I felt like that should have been a story of it's own because I seriously felt like I was reading to different books because they don't really correlate with each other besides the fact that their brothers and having women trouble. LeAnn and Tony's story felt a little disappointing because it was a side story you don't get much of the background story to it, but I felt like their love story could have been intense if it was a book of it's own.
