This is a zombie story - sort of - with a bit of romance too.Set in 1851, Eve whose heritage is both white and Indian is asked to join an expedition into the mountains with a group of men due to her tracking skills.The money offered persuades Eve's Uncle with whom she lives that this is a brilliant idea!With little choice, Eve sets off with her friend Avery, a female chaperon Donna and the men who seem pretty scary and unscrupulous.What they find in the mountains is very gruesome and the fight for survival begins.Not your usual zombie story but it worked really well. I liked Eve who narrated the story and the other characters were believable.Fast paced and gory but with a softer side too I would definitely recommend this one for a quick Halloween read. Well I feel a little torn about this book. I liked the horror elements. I liked the romance aspect. But something feels incomplete about this. I feel like there's no resolution to the horror that was faced. They just escape the mountains but don't tell anyone? I guess I kinda get that because who would believe that but still, shouldn't people be warned?? How long have these zombies been picking people off in the mountains? Why haven't the zombies become more widespread? They just stay in the mountains (for the most part). Plus, these zombies don't behave entirely like zombies as they seem to have a higher level of thinking than typical zombies. I thought it was interesting to take a historical fact, the demise of the Donner party, and weave horror into it. I guess I just wanted it to have more of an impact like Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter.
