Come in "Nove regole da ignorare per farlo innamorare", anche la storia raccontata in questo secondo libro della serie 'Love by numbers' di Sarah MacLean, comincia grazie ad un espediente buffo ed originale: la rivista per signore "Perle e Pellicce", stila una lista di consigli e trucchi per le donne che desiderano conquistare gli scapoli più desiderati di Londra, inserendo al primo posto di questa speciale classifica Nicholas St.John, il fratello gemello del marchese di Ralston, conosciuto nel primo libro della serie. Tediato e oppresso da uno stuolo di ammiratrici e costantemente seguito dalle madri di figlie in età da matrimonio, speranzose di accasarlo con la loro prole, Nicholas accetta la richiesta di un amico e scappa da Londra, desideroso di allontanarsi per lungo tempo dal genere femminile.Si ritrova così nello Yorkshire, e per una serie di "sfortunate" e pericolose coincidenze, costretto ad essere ospite indesiderato della strana ed eccentrica Lady Isabel Townsend.L'inizio di questa storia mi ha così piacevolmente colpito e divertito, che nutrivo grandi aspettative per tutto il romanzo. Ho sorriso parecchio per tutta la prima metà del libro, divertendomi nel leggere le buffe situazioni in cui Isabel si ritrovava ed il modo in cui, con una scusa più fantasiosa del'altra, la giovane riusciva a svicolare le continue insistenze di Nicholas. Però, più mi immergevo nella lettura, più i protagonisti cominciavano ad innervosirmi:Nicholas è un uomo attratto dalle donne in difficoltà e bisognose di aiuto, e nonostante la cosa gli abbia procurato più di un guaio nel passato, non riesce ad evitare di ritrovarsi coinvolto nei pasticci di Isabel. Alcune sue azioni mi hanno lasciato con l'amaro in bocca, ma avrei potuto passare oltre se dall'altra parte avessi trovato un eroina all'altezza della situazione: il vero problema è stato l'evolversi della protagonista, Lady Isabel. Come Callie nel primo libro, così anche Isabel ha diversi problemi da risolvere e gravose responsabilità a cui provvedere (un padre che l'ha lasciata senza il becco di un quattrino, un fratello a cui badare e diverse ragazze in difficoltà da aiutare); se però la protagonista del primo libro non esitava a mettersi in gioco e ad ingegnarsi per cambiare il proprio destino, così non fa Isabel. La giovane ristagna nella propria autocommiserazione, troppo spaventata dal mondo al di fuori della sua tenuta e da sentimenti che mai prima si era concessa di provare. Credo che l'autrice volesse dare l'immagine di una Isabel forte e resistente, finendo però col rendere la ragazza petulante e troppo testarda. E decisamente fastidiosa.L'ho apprezzata maggiormente nella prima metà del libro, forse perché la sua eccentricità e particolarità dava di lei l'idea che fosse una tipa forte e fuori dal comune.Lo stile della MacLean è comunque scorrevole e semplice, facile da seguire e coinvolgente. La storia mi è comunque piaciuta, nonostante la partenza col botto mi avesse fatto sperare in un finale stellare.Voi lo avete letto? Che ne pensate? Isabel. She is the literal worst and my main reason for this book going downhill for me and it was solely because of her that I couldn't enjoy this book one bit. She didn't come off to me as strong and independent. All she made me see was that she is an extremely stubborn (and not in a good way) and childish ingrate. Her responses to everything were always so churlish.Oh, so Nick saved your life? WELL, the obvious response to that must be: No you didn't. I was fine and nothing would've happened. I was perfectly fine before YOU got here. I didn't ask for your help anyway!!Oh, so you risked your life and Nick saved you and now he's telling you not to repeat what it was that put you in danger in the first place? WELL, the obviously response must be: I can if I want...who are you to tell me otherwise?! It's my house (room/roof/person/etc...) and I can do what I want with it!!I'm sorry...but what? I save your damn life (and not even once...twice!!) and your response is that you were fine and you didn't ask for my help anyway? Wow...just...wow. That's not brevity or being strong-willed or strong or anything -- that's just being an ungrateful bitch. Ugh, just stfu and go fall off the roof already.My god, Nick is damn near a saint for putting up with her crap...ALL THE WAY UNTIL THE END. When he gets upset and hightails it to London at the end, her response to it is to make it about herself (omg look I'm just like my mom...I chased him away!!). He keeps trying to earn her trust and help her over and over again and she keeps rebuffing him and insulting him.And can we just take a minute to talk about her overblown reaction to his reveal as being a "traitor"? She just needs to get off that damn high horse of hers in regards to his alleged lies. Girl, YOU LIED TO HIM, TOO. She lied to him through her teeth over and over and over again and the only reason her "secrets" were dragged out into the open was because he'd already figured them out and literally forced her to confront it. I have no doubt that she would've kept lying to him if he didn't figured it out on his own. Sorry, but she doesn't get to withhold the truth and lie because of REASONS and then turn around and get mad at him when he damn well has reasons of his own.The story wasn't the problem for me and neither was Nick. Nick was mostly just boring and found him to be such a doormat to Isabel's whims and mood swings. Rock and Lara I liked and could get behind if we were given the opportunity to see more of their love story develop. Another complaint is that I felt there was some repetition in the interactions between the hero and heroine in this novel and in the first in the series. In some scenes I just felt as though I was rereading the first book...that's how alike it was!
