The Summer Son, a book I picked as a light summer read and turned out to be way more intense than I expected. Don't let the word summer in the title fool you. I agree with several other reviewers who said this is a well written book. No spoiler, but I felt pretty let down by the ending. I was expecting some sort of thought provoking, can't fall asleep type of a resolution. Instead I got a lot of pieces of the puzzle of James thrown at me with not much to hold it all together. I didn't need the story wrapped up for me with a bow, but I felt like some of the puzzle pieces were superfluous and didn't quite fit. Yes. Craig Lancaster is on my list of favorite authors. After reading the two Edward books it would have been easy for this book to disappoint. Let me say, it does not!!!! Far from it. It plumbs the depths of the human heart: the secrets, the pain, the shame, the rage, the love, the heartbreak that all of us carry within us. How easy it is to judge, to make assumptions. How painful it is to find the truth. Although this centers around a father/son relationship, it could be any relationship, however I think this made it even more poignant.
