About book De Zonderlinge Avonturen Van Het Geniale Bommenmeisje (2013)
I thought this was weird and wonderful! I was hooked after the first chapter or two, and loved how Nombeko went from A-B-C and how fantastical it all was, while at the same time keeping some realism. It was all highly unlikely but still potentially possible, and I loved that...but it did drag on a bit towards the end!The story was full of twists and turns, and I did genuinely like and feel sorry for some of the characters (Nombeko and Holger Two) and really disliked some of the others (Celestine and Holger One "the Idiot"). My favourite chapter had to be, without spoiling anything, the one with the King, the Prime Minister, Nombeko, the Holgers, Celestine and the Countess in, and the very surreal turn of events thereafter!Overall, entertaining read but I really had to work to stay interested at some points, and felt it could have been shorter - having said this, I really did enjoy how the epilogue brought together a few random characters beautifully! Slightly underwhelmed by this. I might be judging a little harshly. Great writing and impressive research, it just didn't have that same 'bonkers' quality that The Hundred Year Old Man had. There were moments and the characters were great, but I felt bogged down in world politics rather than bemused by how stupid the truth really is.It was a book club that voted for this (well, the members of the book club, the club itself is showing little or no sign of becoming a person) and I think the members wanted a safe bet and to continue enjoying THYOM. I suspected that it wouldn't be the same, and it wasn't. And, arguably, nor should it be. If you like your politics but want a light-hearted take on it, then this is for you. If you want a repeat of the mad-cap ride that was The Hundred Year Old Man, then you will be disappointed.

I did not like this book. I did not find it funny. The whole story was rather over the top!
