Although we surely know that life back then was perilous and uncertain, that does not stop lovers of history and romance from secretly imagining themselves dressed in gowns of the finest silk and dancing on the arm of a braw Scottish laird in the great halls of old.Gwendolen MacEwen does not begin her married life in such a way. Left alone after her brother's departure and her father's untimely death, Gwen and her mother attempt to defend their home from the great Scottish Lion to no avail. Angus MacDonald wants revenge, and he means to capture his former keep by any means necessary. Overpowering the MacEwens, he storms the bailey and takes the suffering clan by surprise, then establishes himself as laird and master before the battle is even completely finished. As part of the spoils of war, he claims Gwen as his new bride, much to her dismay.Determined not to show her fear, Gwen resists Angus at every turn, showing him her defiance and stubborn will to protect her clansmen at every opportunity. Angus, however, is torn between the desire to keep his newly-claimed wife under his thumb or thrash her senseless and be done with her meddling ways. He finally convinces Gwen that only by a united front through marriage an their two clans live in peace, which he assures her is all he wants out of life.Although this story tells the same as many others of its genre, I particularly liked the strong characters of Gwen and Angus. The conflict between them and within themselves is very stirring: he tries to resist his more emotional, softer side when he is around Gwen, and she tries valiantly (but of course, unsuccessfully) to resist the more carnal charms of her new husband. Eventually they find trust and peace, and of course everyone lives happily ever after-this is a romance, is it not?Three stars for Julianne MacLean! Another thrilling journey from beginning to end. I felt for Angus and all he had endured in his lifetime, and even more so when I learned of his mother's death when he was only four years of age. I loved the depth of connection between Angus and Gwendolen, I also enjoyed the journey each go through to better understand not only each other, but themselves as well. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars and have recommended it to many of my friends, whom I believe would enjoy the story as well.
