I read this sort of for research as I've been playing with a story idea of someone kept captive for an extended period of time. The thing that struck me most about this is the way Kampusch holds onto her sense of identity and the way she sees the nuances in her captor. That he isn't just complete villain. That there was still some humanity in him that she had to latch onto in order to survive. And the way she describes the world's reaction to her story. I think that thing that has stuck with me most is her speaking against "Stockholm Syndrome" and talking about the way this "disorder" re-victimizes people by taking away their legitimate right to feelings and beliefs and the ability to actually work through their experience. Instead a syndrome is applied to them as though there is something wrong with being able to see anything good in the person or people who held them against their will. Yet she does this without ever justifying her captor's behavior - she simply sees him as a complicated human with his own issues that impacted his behavior. She doesn't excuse him, but she does forgive him. And to me, that is an even more powerful story of survival. Insgesamt gut, dass sie alles aufgeschrieben hat, aber der Mehrwert für einen Unbeteiligten ist gering. Gegen Ende macht sie sich Gedanken über die Gründe für den Hass und die Ablehnung, die ihr entgegenschlagen, bester Teil, ansonsten ist das Ganze mit zu wenig Distanz erzählt, um Zwischentöne zuzulassen. Das beste Bild, der auf Thermopapier im Laufe der Jahre wieder verschwindende Roman, den sie in ihrem Kerker schrieb, wird nur kurz gestreift; symptomatisch für den Ansatz.
