About book 3,096 Días (2010)

How can I possibly rate this book? It's not a book to ENJOY. The real life story is DEVASTATING. One cannot really "like" it. But, at the same time, I am amazed at the strength of character shown by Natascha Kampusch. I was totally gripped by her story - her ability to reflect on her experience and her desire to tell exactly what happened. There is one part of the book where she is remembering her abduction ... she notes that back then she was afraid of dying. But the many many years as a prisoner had made her afraid of living. I am so glad that even in the situation of almost total hopelessness, she was able to triumph and against almost inconceivable odds, 3096 days later, she managed to escape with her fighting spirit intact. I read this following a recommendation in Taz (a lefty German newspaper). I am not sure why as I don't really like these kinds of books. Unsurprisingly therefore I did not really like this book. The only enlightening part is Natasha Kampusch's explanation of her relationship to her abductor and her view of the label "Stockholm Syndrome". Nonetheless, I guess it partially answers the question: How the hell do you survive eight years in captivity??
