About book Zapomenutá (2012)

I have read several of Ms. McKenzie's books and have always enjoyed them. Although some might categorize her novels as "Chick-Lit", she always has an interesting premise to place her heroine (or antagonist) in. In Forgotten, Emma Tupper a high-powered lawyer on the fast-track to partner, is given a trip to Africa as a final gift from her Mother. Africa was Emma's mother's dream, but she never go to take the trip, so in a desire to fulfill her mother's final wish (and maybe find some balm for the grief she is feeling at this loss) Emma heads to Africa. Shortly after arriving, she becomes ill and is left with some English Speaking philanthropists to heal. As she is recovering, a devastating earthquake strikes the part of Africa she is in and she becomes stranded for almost 6 months. With no communications available to her for the majority of that time, Emma returns home to find things have changed drastically....her law firm thought she was dead, her boyfriend has moved on and there is a strange photographer living in her apartment!!!This book is about putting the pieces back together when everything falls apart. I loved that Emma, though changed, didn't become a "whole new person" after her experience...she wants to fall into the old routines, etc., but nothing fits "quite right". Making the shift, growing from who she was vs. starting from scratch made this story interesting and immensely readable. One of Ms. McKenzie's best. Emma Tupper is a power to be dealt with. She is an attorney at a powerful law firm and is on the fast track to becoming a partner. Her mother dies and leaves her a ticket to go to Africa. It was a lifelong dream to visit this continent, but her mother never made it. Emma goes in her place. Before coming back to the United States, Tswanaland had a large earthquake. Power was lost and the airport was shutdown. Emma Tupper is presumed dead after 6 months of no communication. She comes back to the United States and finds that her apartment is rented to someone else, her accounts are frozen, her office is occupied by her mortal enemy and her boyfriend moved on. Emma tries to get back to something she is familiar with, but its hard with the handsome photographer that is renting her apartment to focus clearly. Catherine McKenzie does a fantastic job writing wonderful conversations between Emma, her best friend Stephanie, Dominic the photographer, her working peers and everyone that Emma comes in contact with. I think the story feels more real to me because very little in Emma's life is easy. There is nothing cut and dry with her boss Matt, her mortal enemy Sophie, or her ex-boyfriend, Craig. There are gray areas that could go either way and Ms. McKenzie keeps you guessing. Even with the photographer, Dominic there are good moments and bad moments. You just want to keep reading to find out what happens. Great read.
