About book The Paleo Solution: The Original Human Diet (2010)
My sister put me on to this. Eye-opening in some areas. Skepticism in others. The discussion of over-eating of carbohydrates, especially grain-based carbs was very enlightening. The science presented was convincing.I would have like to have seen the same analysis on why legumes and dairy is bad. Otherwise, Paleo is at risk for being a religion - you just have faith that it's true instead of understanding why it's true.Just reading about the hormonal interactions signficantly ramped up my awareness of grains. Because I believe it can be harmful over the long run now. And you can't argue with the results. It tracks with some recent bloodwork I've had done. I'm researching now how to change my buying habits to support a true 30 day test, which I want to do. For the time being, I'm increasing vegetables and decreasing grain-based carbs. I just finished this book. Overall, I'd say I enjoyed it. It was informative, if a bit repetitive. A decent beginner book. This book isn't an outline for the diet, however, and is less a Starter Book than it is a quippy essay on the science incorporated in Paleo. But, the 30 Day Meal Plan included is a very good visual guide on learning how to compose a Paleo meal. There are a lot of bad reviews here mostly critiquing the author and not really the book itself. It does require you to sift through a hefty amount of anecdotal muckery, and does get a bit infomercial in quality. However there is still a truckload of info presented for those with some prior knowledge of chem and bio. As for the harsh comments regarding the Author and reviewer's assumption of his personality... He states very early into the book that you do not need to read much of it and can skip to the back chapters without much loss, and reiterates a similar point near the end of the book. Some of these reviews fail to remember a few key things: 1) It's a book geared to SELLING you a diet. 2) The man is an effective personal trainer not a novelist, which actually explains the "arrogance" and forceful brandishing of the points he's trying to make. 3) As an adult YOU are responsible for making your decisions using common sense and enough willpower to resist being distracted by point-of-view commentary or frustrating narration. All in all, regardless of his Not For Everyone style of writing, the book is worth a read for the simple fact of accumulating information to make an educated decision on making a life change that has enormous impact upon your mortality (just like all diets). I was torn between 3 and 4 stars, but ultimately decided on 4 to combat the misleading overall rating (it's likely most people will benefit from reading this book) due to arrogant reviewers whose seemingly sole motivation was to tear down a person they do not know based on one book he's written.

The content of the book is actually great and potentially life-changing. My problem with it is Rob Wolff's writing - he seems to think all his readers are utter idiots incapable of understanding the simplest things, and his explanations are dumbing-down and derogatory. I skimmed through a lot of it, because the style was making me angry. If you're OK with the way he writes, then the book can be great. If you're not, don't expect it to get better. It does not.
