Ο Αιθίοπας Άμπι-Ρουχ-Ιγιασούς βρίσκεται νεκρός και το σώμα του είναι γεμάτο από σταυρικά σκαριφήματα ενώ ταυτόχρονα σημειώνονται κλοπές του Τιμίου Ξύλου απ’ όλο τον κόσμο. Οι Ορθόδοξες και η Καθολική Εκκλησία βρίσκονται σε αδιέξοδο από το οποίο καλούνται να τις βγάλουν 3 άτομα. Πρόκειται για τη Δόκτωρα Οτάβια Σαλίνα, μοναχή του Τάγματος της Μακαρίας Αειπαρθένου Μαρίας και υπεύθυνη του Εργαστηρίου Αποκατάστασης και Παλαιογραφίας του Μυστικού Αρχείου του Βατικανού (ουφ), τον Καθηγητή Φάραγκ Μπόσγουελ, αρχαιολόγο από την Αλεξάνδρεια και το Λοχαγό Κάσπαρ Γκλάουζερ-Ρέιστ, αξιωματικό της Ελβετικής Φρουράς του Βατικανού (ο Βράχος, όπως τον αποκαλεί η Οτάβια).Χρησιμοποιώντας ως οδηγό τη Θεία Κωμωδία του Δάντη και τις δοκιμασίες που υποβάλλεται για να εξαγνιστεί από τα 7 θανάσιμα αμαρτήματα (Οκνηρία, Αλαζονεία, Λαιμαργία, Λαγνεία, Απληστία, Οργή, Ζηλοφθονία), η παράξενη παρέα περνά, με όλα τα προσφερόμενα μέσα από τις Εκκλησίες, από τις 7 πόλεις που η κάθε μία αντιπροσωπεύει ένα αμάρτημα (Ρώμη, Ραβένα, Αθήνα, Ιερουσαλήμ, Κωνσταντινούπολη, Αλεξάνδρεια, Αντιόχεια). Στο τέλος κάθε δοκιμασίας τους περιμένει μία έκπληξη. Πάνω στο σώμα τους χαράσσεται και από ένα σταυρικό σκαρίφημα. Βέβαια, πολύ νωρίς έχουν λύσει το αίνιγμα για το ποιος είναι πίσω από τις κλοπές και με ανυπομονησία περιμένουν να φτάσουν στο τέλος. Πρόκειται για την Αδελφότητα των Σταυροφυλάκων που ιδρύθηκε το 341 μ.Χ. με σκοπό τη διαφύλαξη του Τιμίου Σταυρού που ανακαλύφθηκε από την αγία Ελένη, μητέρα του αυτοκράτορα Κωνσταντίνου το 326 μ.Χ. Αρχηγός της Αδελφότητας είναι ο Κάτων.Οι δοκιμασίες τελειώνουν και οι 3 ήρωες βρίσκονται στον Επίγειο Παράδεισο. Εκεί, σε μια τεράστια υπόγεια φυσική κατασκευή, συναντούν τον Κάτωνα ΣΝΖ. Οι Σταυροφύλακες ζουν έχοντας το δικό τους αξιόλογο πολιτισμό, κρυμμένοι απ’όλον τον κόσμο. Οι 3 εντυπωσιάζονται απ’ όσα βλέπουν και κάθε σχέδιό τους να τους παραδώσουν στα χέρια της Αστυνομίας ναυαγεί. Η Οτάβια και ο Φάραγκ ζουν τον έρωτά τους και ο Βράχος βρίσκει το alter ego του και γίνεται ο επόμενος Κάτων…Το μυθιστόρημα είχε ένα βασικό ελάττωμα. Δεν είχε συναρπαστικότητα και η άρμοση ήταν ευρεία. Από δοκιμασία σε δοκιμασία η μόνη σύνδεση ήταν το κείμενο του Δάντη. Ήταν στεγνός ταξιδιωτικός οδηγός στους τόπους και στην ιστορία τους και οι ήρωες ήταν ξύλινοι, επαναλαμβανόμενοι και καθόλου γοητευτικοί και πρωτότυποι. Οι διάλογοι ήταν θλιβεροί και η φαντασία του Επίγειου Παράδεισου εξαντλήθηκε σε επίπεδο τέλματος…

I personaggi una suora (Ottavia Salina), un capitano della guardia svizzera (Glauser Roist) e un professore (Faraga Boswell) insieme ai quali vivremo un'avventura fino a raggiungere Paradeisos "un luogo incomparabile, molto arretrato sul piano materiale, ma molto avanti sotto altri aspetti. Lì si ignorava la fretta, l'angoscia, la lotta quotidiana per sopravvivere in un mondo pieno di pericoli. La vita trascorreva piacevolmente e la gente sapeva apprezzare ciò che aveva." Attraverso lepagine di questo libro scopriremo l'amore tra due persone molto diverse, conosceremo tanti elementi storici e monumenti, accenni al modo di agire della mafia e di una famiglia siciliana (la sua omertà) e soprattutto della Chiesa Cattolica: "Tu non comprendi Catone ribatte la Roccia con la stessa determinazione Lassù la gente non sempre fa il lavoro che le piace. Spesso l'esatto contrario. La mia fede in Dio è forte ed è ciò che mi ha sorretto negli anni in cui ho lavorato per la Chiesa. Una Chiesa che ha dimenticato il Vangelo e che per non rinunciare ai propri privilegi, è pronta a mentire, ingannare e interpretare le parole di Gesù a propria convenienza." Il viaggio che ho fatto con questo libro mi è piaciuto abbastanza dò 3stelle e mezzo,ho amato la determinazione dei protagonisti e dell'eccellente immaginazione della scrittrice che ha creato un romanzo d'azione e di mistero partendo da un "libro pilastro" della cultura italiana mi è un pò scaduto perchè manca di un colpo di scena vero e proprio nel finale!
Do You like book The Last Cato (2007)?
OMG! (As any of my grand-daughters would say.) I can not believe I had this on my bookshelves for two years before I read it! I love this book! It is not for everyone. The history is THICK. But the writing is wonderful, the story complicated - so I did not figure it out in the first half as I usually do - and the characters were unusual but believable. This book was originally written in Spanish but is about an Italian family. Yes, that is what I said. And Dante's Divine Comedy is what holds the clues to the whereabouts of the artifacts for which they are searching. 'They' are Dr. Octavia Salina, a nun, who is a paleographer for the Vatican, asked to decipher the tatoos and markings on the body of an Ethipian man recently killed in a plain crash, her helper (Keeper?), Kaspar Glauser-Roist, from the Pope's Swiss Guard and an Egyption Archeologist, Farog Boswell. Before long, the three find themselves tracking an acient order called the Staurofilakes, sworn to protect the True Cross of Christ. And this order is now stealing all the peices of the cross that have been kept in various religious sites around the globe. Soon Octavia, Kasper and Farog are jumping around the world, in and out of danger, tracking these Staurofilakes. I had to think while reading this book, but I enjoyed that. You might also need to like, or appreciate, history to truly 'get-into' reading The Last Cato. It has been compared to The Da Vinci Code, but I did not think it was much like it. Written before Dan Brown's novel, it is a much better book. For me, this is just the type of read I crave. Asensi has one other book that has been translated into English and I am hot on its trail . . .

El libro me ha mantenido enganchado hasta el final gracias a todos esos momentos tipo Indiana Jones o Lara Croft...Sin embargo, me ha resultado muy cansina la protagonista, con su mojigatería y su despertar hormonal.Los giros en la trama y los personajes son un tanto irrisorios, y tanto obispo y tanta cruz aburren a un santo.Creo que este libro pasará muy pronto a la región del olvido en mi memoria. No ocurrirá lo mismo con la obra maestra hacia la cual ha despertado mi interés: La Comedia de Dante. Ya he leído parte del Infierno y es una maravilla!!!!!! Tengo que agradecerle a Matilde Asensi este detalle. Ah, y que regalara el libro a los usuarios de Kindle.

This book is a delightful historical fantasy. The author allows the reader to experience a literary game played out with Dante's Purgatorio as the rule book and travel guide. While these kinds of conceits frequently produce adventure and action at the expense of interesting characterization, Asensi's characters evolve as interesting and complex human beings. The settings are detailed and richly drawn.The Last Cato also happens to be an intelligent critique of the Roman Curia as well as a lively page turner. I was particularly intrigued that the author managed to stick her foot in some large doors that John Paul II attempted to slam shut after the death of John XXIII and John Paul I. For those who aren't familiar with post Vatican II history, her references are a terrific place to start. Those who are familiar with it will find themselves revisited by overwhelming claustrophobia in places, reliving the Vatican's removal of any and all air, fresh or otherwise. from the church.
