Okay, so! Like many other fans of Cinda Williams Chima's original Heir and Seven Realms series, I was absolutely ecstatic when the Enchanter Heir was released. Having finally read it, I will admit that I quite enjoyed it. While it's arguably not as compelling as most of her work, it is an enjoyable read all the same. With that being said, there are some observations I would like to share. First, the development takes some time and it's a bit difficult to accept. Due to where the initial trilogy left off, it does feel like a wee bit of an awkward transition. For example, the main antagonists of the last series are almost casually eliminated before contributing anything substantial to the plot development. I am not suggesting that it doesn't work. Given that however, certain parts of the exposition feel like pieces to a jigsaw puzzle that are veeeery nearly the right fit, but don't quite make it. The second thing (really the first and most prominent) is the soppy attractions. As with her other books, two of the main characters, Emma and Jonah in this instance, fall super hard for each other. That would be all good and great if the time spent dwelling over the fact that they were so simply and inexplicably devoted to the other was put more towards a reason for why that actually was. I won't lie, absolutely nothing wrong with a little physical attraction, just don't overdo it. Finally, the biggest head scratcher (in my humble opinion) of the whole thing is the ending. As I said earlier, this book is a bit slow to take off. However, when things begin to get interesting, it drops out completely. I don't mean like cliff hanger drop out. In this book you're given a whole bunch of info, and even more questions you'd want answers to. you'd hope to find SOME of the answers by the end of the book, right? not here. Unfortunately, there is nothing that really ties up at the end. Absolutely nothing. A lot of questions compounding, and too few answers. It's almost like you're running up a hill, knowing you're about to crest it, amd see your prize in the valley below... when you trip over a rock, and fall flat on your face. The end. Good book all the same! After struggling to pick up the plot of this book and align it with the previous books in this series, I found myself drawn into the characters and their internal struggles which they must overcome in the midst of external forces. Ok, so the book pulls heavily from some YA cliches that just won't die: the guy who can never love because he can't physically touch anyone who finds the one girl who may be able to withstand his power, the girl who was hidden away to protect her from a dark threat hiding in her parents' past lives, etc., but the story is still entertaining and, when the author finally brings back the characters from the earlier books, they fit in nicely (though it's been so long, I've forgotten some of their stories).A quick read and worth the time.
