About book The Blinding Light (2014)

This author really knows how to build a couple. I loved it in "Loving Jay," and I liked it a lot here too. I was rooting hard for Jake and Patrick. I adored their banter and the bullet-pointed letters. The story lost a little steam at the mid-point. The family drama was too much. Jake spent his whole life looking out for his sisters, and they were finally becoming independent. He was getting to live for himself. I'm not sure I bought Jake's acceptance of his mother's plan. As a result, the lack of epilogue was a glaring omission. 3.75ish. I do love a feisty caregiver/grumpy client story and this one certainly delivered. Jake was actually the housekeeper, but same difference. Lovvvvvvved Jake and Patrick and loved the progression of the story. The author didn't mess around with a bunch of angst and Patrick being a complete jerk. No, it was pretty smooth sailing once they actually met each other and stopped relying on housekeeping notes. Heck, even the notes were funny! I loved the story until about 65% in, then it started to lose me a bit. Patrick's constant self deprecation about being blind was a bit weird to me, especially considering he's been blind all his life and was successful. One boyfriend making a harsh break up comment shouldn't have been enough to derail him. I get that it is difficult and he had given up hope, but it just seemed 'off'. And really, who laughs and points when a blind person trips? Do people actually do that outside of a few bastards in junior high?? I've never actually seen that happen. Usually, people go out of their way to try to 'help' blind people, often to the annoyance of the blind person. The blind 'humor' was a bit tasteless at times. It's one thing not to pity a blind person; it's another to be an insensitive jerk. Some of it was funny, but some went overboard. The twist with the mom at the end, eh, I didn't know how I felt about it when it was first revealed especially since we all knew how it would play out, but I did like where the author went with it so it ended up being fine. All in all, a really good and fun read. Well written, well edited, LOVED Patrick and Jake (Jake was a bit campy without being overdone)and the supporting characters were wonderful.
