About book Stitch Me Deadly (2011)

I enjoyed this cosy mystery which has a theme of mother and daughter. The heroine Marcy has moved away from her West Coast mother and opened a small town sewing and embroidery shop; she gives lessons in handcrafts which helps generate custom. This is the second in the series and when a senior lady brings in an antique sampler and gently keels over and expires, it seems not so much tragic as a regrettable coincidence that she is the second person to die in the shop. After all, she wasn't murdered or anything. Then it turns out that a drug is found in the lady's system and the police discover a bottle of these pills which Marcy's mother left behind with her when she stayed last. Cue return of anxious matriarch from her Hollywood costume making career, to protect her beloved daughter, who would rather protect herself, thanks. She's got a Wolfhound for the purpose. What with prison visits and estate sales there is a good variety of locations and some fun, and my only complaint is that Todd and Ted are names which are too similar, so I had trouble sorting out the boyfriends. The internet is used and so is common sense. We keep coming back to the sewing shop and that pretty sampler, so anyone into the crafts will enjoy this read. All my favorite characters are back in this second installment of the Seven Year Stitch embroidery shop mysteries. Shop owner, Marcy Singer, has survived the investigation of a dead body in her new shop and is continuing to make friends in the small town of Tallulah Falls, Oregon. She's still undecided about her feelings for shop owner, Todd, or the handsome detective, Ted. Her Hollywood costume designing mom is visiting too.All is going beautifully until an elderly lady comes into the Seven Year Stitch with an antique sampler, wanting to "find ivy ". No sooner had she sat down and made her request, then she fell over, was taken to the hospital and died. Now Marcy must get herself out of being a suspect in another murder . This time she figures she must "follow the money" to see who benefits from this nice old lady's death. She's sure that the sampler holds the solution to the crime.I really enjoy the needlework references, Marcy's Irish Wolfhound, and the interaction of Marcy and her two suitors, in these stories. Especially interesting in these mysteries are the references to old movies and TV shows. After all, the shop's name comes from a play on the movie, The Seven a Year Itch, and her shop's mascot is a full sized mannequin named, Jill, who looks just like the movie's star, Marilyn Monroe. Especially fun in this book is Marcy's mom. Good clues and a fun mystery.
