Have you ever wondered what a microscopic world looks like? Well so has David Wisener. In his story Mr. Wuffles, Wisner opens up a microscopic world to his viewers through the eyes of an unlikely character, his cat. In this wordless piece of scientific fiction, Wisner takes us on a journey which is exciting a unlike anything I have ever encounter in a picture book. By enabling the use of comic strips as a mechanism of storytelling, Wisner allows an imaginative world to come alive before readers without the use of words.In this story Mr.Wuffles is given a new toy by his owner, uninterested in the toy Mr.Wuffles continues to his usual sitting place by a wooden cabinet. Unbeknownst to Mr.Wuffles as he makes his way past his pile of wanted pile of toys, a group of aliens has landed within the pile. Mr.wuffles paws at the strange toy, knocking it back forth and upside down until the ship is broken. With a broken ship the aliens must find replaceable parts, they venture out of the ship making their way past Mr.Wuffles before venturing into the microscopic world underneath the cabinet. Underneath the cabinet the aliens create a new friendship with the insect whom inhabit the world.Wiseners interpretation of this microscopic world is both simulating and entertaining for readers of all ages. By asking viewers to see the world differently, Wisner asks younger readers to consider the world around them and grow from the experiences they encounter, while also requesting that the older audience consider the world around them and how they effect and alter all outcomes. Mr. wuffles replicates the world around us, showing us the unbelievable within the everyday. The world is far bigger and more interactive then we perceive. In this wordless book by Wiesner, the main character is a cat named Mr. Wuffles (poor guy). He refuses to play with any of the toys his owner buys for him. But when a toy sized alien ship lands in his space, he takes an interest. Unfortunately, he damages the ship causing the aliens to disembark for repairs. They find allies among the bugs under the furniture who help the aliens regain their ship and fly home.Wiesner's intelligence and humor show throughout this book. The illustrations are fascinating and created in a manner that tells the story without words. The use of aliens is unique.This book is advertized for grade preschool-3. However, as with most of Wiesner's books, the content is at a higher maturity level that can be understood or enjoyed for the younger children. I think grades 2-5 would be more appropriate.
