The first book was so good, it may have put my expectations a little high for this novel. But even with that, Phillipa delivered. The addition of the Grand Duchess POV was an interesting one. I would have liked to see more of her, to get a better feel for why she was so devout before all the geist-trickery. The twist before the ending was heartbreaking. I had to stop reading for a minute to compose myself because oh my goodness it was tragic. I’m usually pretty good at predicting twists and betrayals and this one caught me by surprise. The ending felt a little bit too sudden. And while I’m okay with it in this book because it’s number two of a series, and I know for a fact there’s a third book to pick up the slack, I’m still a little shell shocked and I think I’ll take a break before picking up the third. Certainly better than the first book, Spectyr was a solid 4-star read. Mysteries revealed, lots of non-boring action, excellent unfolding of the plot. Still wondering about the sub-plot (if it can be called that) involving the Chancellor/blonde woman/lots of murders stuff because she doesn't really do much with that and you kind of get the feeling like the reader is supposed to forget about it because it only served to further the plot and since it's done that, it's no longer important. I really enjoyed this one, much more than the first.Oh yeah. And what's up with the Duchess at the end? Without giving away too much, I'm a little dissatisfied with how they treated her at the end.
