Agent Wellington Books and Agent Eliza Braun once again under take investigation without Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences. This investigation is into the disappearances of key members of suffragist movement. The only thing is a brilliant blue light appears around the target just prior to disappearing. Meanwhile Agent Bruce Campbell is ordered by Duke Sussex to gain access to Restricted Area before months end or suffer the consequences of his lack of action. Questions abound about The mysterious Maestro but certainly no answers so far. Will Agent Campbell or Duke Sussex be caught? Will Eliza be bogged down by the past? Can the case be cracked? Your answers await you in The Janus Affair.I must admit that steampunk is slowly becoming a favorite genre for me. I find Books and Braun to be fascinating characters that are real and flawed. The writing team responsible for this series weaves tightly knit story with all the classic elements in them. I definitely looking forward to my next adventure in the series. We are back with Books and Braun as they solve another case involving crazy plots and kidnappings!Compared to the first one, this story was more mature, had greater character complexity, and overall flowed better. Books wasn't so charmingly befuddled and Braun wasn't just a walking set of breasts. Further, there was a greater historical context (women's suffrage movement) and more steampunk tech.Overall, an improvement upon the first book.
Not bad, but not as good as the first book. I found myself skipping parts of it to get to the end.
