About book Sleeper Season 1 (2013)

An early effort from the Brubaker/Phillips team, this is a slice of sleazy noir set in the darkest corner of a superhero universe. The protagonist is as doomed as it's possible to be, but his efforts to survive are constantly interesting, and the trope of the "origin story" is used to remarkable effect, especially in the climactic chapter. Worth finding and reading no matter what kind of comics you prefer. What a great spy thriller! It has all the tropes; double agents, femme fatales, double crosses etc. But it's set in a world of super humans. The story just barely touches that world on occasion, only when absolutely necessary. Holden is in deep undercover working for a super-criminal. He's so deep only his boss knows he's not a traitor. Problems is his boss is in a coma! Brubaker & Phillips, despite not yet having found their rhythm (or colorist) in this early collaboration , still tell an amazing story of man with nowhere to go but deeper and deeper into the super-criminal underworld. Has he forgotten who he really is? Or is he starting to find himself?
