About book Silent Tears: A Journey Of Hope In A Chinese Orphanage (2008)

“I enjoyed this book as I have always been fascinated with books on adoption, and to see what it is like for these children at this particular orphanage was eye opening. This is a story of a North American woman, who's husband is transferred to China for 4 years, she also has a young daughter, who has to adjust. While there she becomes a volunteer and main coordinator for volunteer efforts at this one orphanage. Tales of abuses, neglect of these children but also the tons of love, these volunteers have brought to them, and the changes that are made through their efforts. A gripping non-fiction account of a woman's experience volunteering in a Chinese orphanage while living in China as an ex-pat. She writes in a candid journal style, recalling the daily happenings and events involving her new life in China with her husband and daughter as well as her days working with and in the orphanage. The stories about the babies and kids tug at your heart, as you imagine what the conditions were like for everyone involved in the orphanage. You see glimpses of her wrestling with her own emotions, while navigating and trying to understand a different culture and way of life. The struggles involve emotional hardships, descriptions of dealing with bureaucracy, and becoming deeply involved in the lives of the children (many disabled and/or forgotten) at the orphanage.
