3.5 stars. I really liked Rune and Carling before this book and I liked them even better together. The reason why this book wasn't a 4 star read is because I found a lot of the explanations for the magic that occurred in the book convoluted. And when I have to try to hard to understand what is going on, I usually say eff it which means I don't care which means the book is not as impactful as it could be. I will say that Thea Harrison's writing is very poetic in this one. She really stepped it up. Like I said it wasn't a bad book it's just that the things that happened in it, the source of conflict, was just too complicated. I wasn't sure I was going to like Carling after her appearance in Storm's Heart. She was distant and strange and hard to connect with. However, she's like that for a good reason, and she doesn't stay that way as this book progresses. I enjoyed her developing relationship with Rune. While this book is rather light on plot (it's basically all about the disease), I feel like the author crafted characters that were strong enough and interesting enough to make the story work.
