This book was a surprise because as I was reading it I felt so relaxed and just enjoyed a great story. There was way less action and even less funny stuff, less sex but there was way more romance and sweetness.I respect this authors versatility and her ability to tell me a story.I finished the book and though....you know what - if that was any other author I might have got bored but I didnt. I really enjoyed this book - it was beautiful and sweet xoxo I’ve been lucky enough to read a few of the other books in the Elder Races series (although not all of them, unfortunately) and I have enjoyed each one. This is thanks to both Thea Harrison’s writing skill and the supernatural plot lines, which never fail to interest me.Strangely, it took me a while to get into this seventh full length instalment. I just didn’t feel the pull towards the characters I usually do; this is what normally draws me in and keeps me turning the pages. I managed to engage myself in the book around 60% of the way in but, overall, I found the interactions between Tess and Xavier fairly composed. The usual intensity between the two leads wasn’t there and it was noticeable. Maybe this was intentional, not every romance has to be fuelled by passion alone, and the author deliberately penned more restrained characters? Or maybe the series is simply running out of steam? I certainly hope not. With all that being said, I did enjoy the book. Xavier is refined, interesting and a true gentleman, which is a sharp contrast to Tess’ brave and feisty character. Her appearance at the Vampyre’s Ball early in the book makes her instantly likeable, plus the fact she’s in trouble gives her an interesting angle.Definitely worth a read but keep in mind you won’t find the usual heat and magnetic pull of the characters.Review by Charlotte Foreman on behalf of BestChickLit.com
