About book Peanut Goes To School (2014)

Liam "Peanut" Cuelebre is a powerful Wyr born from two rare Wyr parents Dragos and Pia Cuelebre. Liam is actually 6 months old but is the size of first grader. He knows how to read, write, and do math. His parents decide that he needs to interact with other children to understand the balance of power needed being two natured creature. Liam is tested in this new environment. Will Liam learn balance? Your answers await you in Peanut Goes to School. I had a difficult time deciding how to rate this short novella, part three in a three novella story about Dragos, Pia and their son, Liam, set in the Elder Races universe. I love this adorable little family and could read a new story about them every day. Even before the little Peanut came along Dragos and Pia were one of my favorite PNR couples. And Liam? Oh my goodness. This beautiful child is so precocious! These little snippets into his growing up are wonderful to read.Although this is part three all the stories can be read as stand alone. In Peanut Goes to School Liam heads off to first grade where he encounters a teacher that's difficult to get a along with and bullies. Thea Harrison does a fantastic job of getting into Peanut's head. While he is growing at an unprecedented rate (both physically and mentally) he's still a kid. He's also immensely Powerful and is developing his own unique abilities. This makes him a handful for his parents, but this kid has such a support system! There were a few things that felt inconsistent for me about this story, which is why it gets three stars. Warning: from here on out there be spoilers...While I think Thea Harrison did a great job of portraying Peanut there was a (ridiculously cute) conversation between him and a Dark Fae girl, Marika. Marika is a third grader but uses the phrases "hella awesome" and "excuse my French." Yeah, kids repeat things but they don't usually know how to use those monkey-see, monkey-do phrases in context. When Marika agrees to be his girlfriend for a week (ah! so cute!) Liam tells another kid, "I'm dating an older woman now." This seemed really out of character even for this highly intelligent kid to say. The other issue I had with this story was Liam's evil teacher. In a school with other Wyr children and at least a few part Fae children I would assume the school would have teachers who know how to handle these kids. Apparently not. And Dragos and Pia only informing the principal and not Liam's teacher about his true identity was a huge blunder. Really? You know how special your kid is and you didn't tell the woman who will be teaching him and caring for him in the classroom when you have an army of people usually watching him? Really? Sorry, not buying it. As for the nasty teacher while I didn't like her for a villain in this story sometimes bad teachers really do through the cracks. Her behavior was so repulsive, but I still find it difficult to believe that a teacher who would overreact so quickly and shake a child hadn't been investigated or fired yet. End rant.I did enjoy reading this and will be looking out for Peanut's next adventures. Hopefully Thea Harrison doesn't make us wait long because this kid is growing up fast and I don't want to miss any of it!
