Excellent series, rating is Characters/Personal interactions 5, mystery 3.75 (they were busy with the personal), voicing 5.Metadata: Southern, Mystery, Ghosts, Historical, Family, Romance (Romance being last because it was just a flicker in books 1 & 2)I loved this series, the characters really made this story shine, the mystery in this novel was probably the weakest of the series. But, I think if you read the series in order you were dying for this book and it didn't disappoint. Mellie/Jack and the cast of characters are top notch, Mellie's neurotic tendencies work with this story, Jack is clueless at times but seriously wonderful as well, Nola... what can I say ... can I adopt her and the rest of the family really grows on you. This series at the time of this review is 4 novels in length, a clear beginning, middle and end. This series makes a historical mystery with ghosts shine, just look at books 1 and 2. KW has committed to three more novels in this series and I do see this series returning more to book 1 & 2 format and plot development. Though knowing this cast of characters, a ghost will throw a monkey wrench into the personal I can practically guarantee that.If ghost turn you off, it's not a series were the characters talk to the ghosts, it's more that the ghosts leave clues that using historical references and a bit of detective work the characters unravel the mystery. Enjoy this wonderful series and if you can listen to it on audio, the voicing is excellent. This series really could do with a better editor. Every one of the books has continuity issues, with you being told something "astonishing" that has actually been stated earlier in the book. In this one, Jack's father actually changes his name from Jack to James. Mellie is also as insecure as ever, and lets everyone walk all over her - a bit more backbone and the ability to believe in herself and say no to the insufferable Rebecca, as well as those telling her what she may and may not eat, would be nice. This level of doormat isn't endearing, it's just irritating. Having said that, I have enjoyed this series. That bit of characterisation, and better editing from Penguin, would lift this to a must-read.
