About book RASL, Vol. 3: Romance At The Speed Of Light (2011)
This is the third volume collecting Jeff Smith's noir science fiction tale RASL. According to Smith the next volume will be the last and it will be interesting to see what sort of finale he is planning. In this volume the plot thickens even further with the appearance of yet another inter-dimensional traveler, electrocuted birds falling from the sky, and local break up of space-time. The artwork is still fantastic and it really deserve to be seen in this over-sized format. I certainly look forward to the fourth and apparently final volume. After Jeff Smith finished his award winning series "Bone," he knew he wanted his next project to wrestle with a more mature subject matter. RASL is a sci-fi noir. It is based on what physicist call string theory and everyone else calls other dimensions. It follows a scientist who has nothing left to loose. When we first meet RASL, he is ripping off a Picasso from a near identical dimension and passing it off in Vegas as a perfect counterfeit. The story is a fascinating combining elements of Nicolas Tesla, Southwest American native mythology, and interestingly flawed characters. It is rare to read a story with such wide reaching ideas and so few characters. In its focus on relationships and character development it almost feels like a stage play. It is a complex mystery, so if you are interested in reading it, I would wait the 6 month to a year when the last book in the series comes out and you can read it in one go.
