Genre: Controlled VocabularyTitle: Little Mouse Gets ReadySummary: This book begins with the mother mouse calling to the little mouse. She tells him that she is headed to the barn with his siblings. She asks him if he’s ready to go. As he gets ready, the little mouse comments on the level of difficulty for each item that he puts on. While dressing, he tells the reader how excited he is to get to the barn and how fun it will be once he gets there. He will be able to run and hid, eat oats and even swim in the cow’s water. After waiting, his mother calls for him again and realizes that he’s fully dressed. To his surprise, she tells him that mice don’t wear clothes. With this wonderful bit of news, Little Mouse tosses the clothing to the side and scurries off to the barn. a) Area for comment: StyleCritique: b) In little mouse gets ready, the mouse is determined that he will get dressed in time to get ready to go to the barn. The thickness of the lines tells the reader that this is a vibrant and exciting book. How little mouse talks to himself as he gets ready gives the hint of excitement in the story. The comic- style presentation is an interesting book to read because it portrays many different pictures throughout the story.c) On pages 8 and 9 it shows the little mouse laying all of his clothes out and saying how excited he is to go to the barn. For example; “Oh boy, I love going to the barn!”(page8) and on page nine, “Yes sir! There are LOTS of places to run and hide in the barn!” throughout the story, Little Mouse is carefully putting on his clothes and commenting on what to do or if it’s hard or not. It is almost like he is remembering what someone taught him about putting on clothes and he is thinking aloud.Curriculum connection: this book can be used in a preschool class as a helper to encourage the children to get dressed on their own. Little mouse comments on some of the things that he does, that children typically think are hard, are not that hard at all. For example, on page 11 little mouse says; “Snapping pants isn’t TOO hard.” The author put emphasis on the word too, so that it could persuade a reader into thinking the same thing. Jeff Smith is the creator of many comic books. Most notable among them is the Bone series. Here though Jeff Smith has been tapped to write a first comic for brand new readers. I for one think it is wonderful. The illustrations scream Jeff Smith and the story is short (no pun intended) and sweet. Little mouse has to get ready to go to the barn with his family, so little mouse shows us how he gets ready. I don’t want to give it away, but there is a nice little ending that will even give adults a quick chuckle.
