Let me say at the outset, I have absolutely no interest in golf yet I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. Though it uses golf as a basis, the novel is about life, love, marriage, parenting and relationships. London’s wife died when his son August was very young. Relationships between father and son have always been strained, as London is passionate about golf - a game August has no talent for or interest in. Given such a negative example of parenting, August decided he never wanted children. When he finds out his wife Erin is pregnant, he is less than thrilled. That’s when his father comes up with the idea of a monthly golf game. Nothing would induce August to agree except... London has something August desperately wants - memories of his mother written on golf scorecards. He agrees to the monthly begrudgingly. Over the course of the months of Erin’s pregnancy and the monthly golf lessons, both August and London learn more about each other.There are people who will perhaps say this book is sentimental. I don’t care. I found it charming. Despite my lack of interest in golf, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I chuckled and laughed at times and shed a tear or two as well. My husband watching these responses decided he needed to read this book as well. He has zero interest in golf too but this book is not about golf, it is about life. Along the way it comes out with some helpful thoughts. ‘With your spouse, if you support and encourage each other, and always put the other person first, then your marriage will be able to survive whatever turbulence may come.’ If each person in a marriage did that maybe marriages today would be in less trouble? although i dont like golf this book was very good. i love the author.a man didnt get along with his father. his mother was dead. he didnt know why his father didnt let him join the golf team in hswhen his wife got pregnant he came to his dad, he didnt want to be a father and blamed his dad. he didnt want to be a dad like himhis father told him he would tell him why he didnt get on the team in hs if he would play golf with him once a month for 9 months till the baby was bornin the agreement he gave him the cards he wrote his thoughts on about his momhe got to learn about his mom and dad thru the cards. he played poorly but learned lessons about life playing golf with his dadhis wife almost died in childbirth and he was really scared. he adopted the baby of the girl that stole his wifes purse and later returned it so he ended up with both a boy and girlhe understood his father better and it was when his mom was dieing that she gave the dad a ball and tee and he thought she meant for him to teach the boy golf, but in hs he realized it was he was supposed to support his son in what he needed to do for himself
