Lila Felix grasped my attention in Love and Skate with her characters who were not afraid to show their originality or their very real heartbreaks. I truly loved the story of Nellie and Owen because it not only showed their strengths but also their weaknesses. I loved the fact that even though Nellie is a tough girl the story showed her vulnerabilities. I loved that the same was shown in the male character, Owen. Since, I love characters who are real, this book suited me and I truly believe that anyone who reads it will find a part of themselves drawn into the story. I give this book five stars and I recommend this book for anyone who likes a sweet and very real romance. A Fun Alternative Love StoryLove and Skate is a Young Adult romance by author Lila Felix. This book was a sweet and enduring tale of how two people worked to move on from the secrets of their past so that they could have a better future. Nellie Forester is a beautiful alternative roller derby girl. She likes to put out a tough front but on the inside she really just wants that sweet and lasting kind of love. The hard part is that her rainbow hair, tattoos and piercing can make it hard to get close to people. Nellie grew up with the perfect life always doing what made everyone else happy. That is until she got hurt so bad that she decided that making everyone else happy was making her just the opposite. She decided to ditch the clean cut look that was forced upon her and let her true self shine. Owen Black is tall, dark, handsome and tatted. After being betrayed by the only girl he ever loved he made choices he cannot take back and feels guilt he cannot get over. He has closed himself off from love. After watching how his bad decisions affected everyone around him he decides to get his life on the right track.Owen meets Nellie in class and is taken aback by the blur haired beauty. He knows from the first moment that this girl is different and that she is meant for him. But can the two of them get over the betrayals of their past relationships in order to have a future together? For me, this book was a sweet Young Adult that is relatively low (as far as typical New Adult goes) drama. I do wish the more intense drama at the end of the book had started a bit sooner. But, that being said I did really enjoy the book and still had a hard time putting it down while I was reading it. The characters were well developed and the love story felt very romantic. At times Owen's gentleness with Nellie made my heart do somersaults. I just loved him. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting a romantic and enjoyable story.
