About book Like The Willow Tree: The Diary Of Lydia Amelia Pierce, Portland, Maine, 1918 (2011)

As I first began reading this book and they described the Shaker lifestyle I thought "Oh God! I could never live this way". But as the story goes on, like the main character, I started to appreciate the peaceful way these people lived trying to work with themselves and make life better for the people in their little community. I found the descriptions of the Shaker life pretty interesting but the rest of the book made for a pretty slow plot. Still, it was short and interesting enough that I don't regret reading it. An interesting, quick read about an orphaned girl who grew up in a Shaker village in Maine. I really enjoyed learning about the Shakers through the story and through the historical commentary at the back of the book. Makes a good study for how an author to can choose and research a historical context and then have at least half of the story written for herself before the character is even created.
