Friday, October 31, 2014Ellie is displayed as very skilled in the beginning of the story as she escapes from a space ship. For instance, Ellie was very smart in keeping any evidence of her on tape. As the author stated, “We’ve been trying to figure out how she did it, but we don’t even have any security footage because she destroyed it before she left” (Clayton 3-4). Furthermore, before she went on the Pod Fighter, which is a petite round space ship, yet before she left, she ensured that no soldier could pursue her. As the author wrote, “Somehow she managed to break into every Pod Fighter on the strip and plant a virus in their flight systems so we couldn’t follow her” (Clayton 4). Therefore, Ellie demonstrates great mastery of planning and abilities throughout the getaway.Mal Gorman, who is the man who kidnapped Ellie, is tremendously terrifying. Mal Gorman is exceptionally thin. As written in the story by the author, “He was so thin, Ellie could see his skull through the papery skin on his face and every brittle bone in his hand” (Clayton 8). Moreover, Gorman is exceptionally old in age. As Emma Clayton wrote, “He sat down heavily on the bed and fumbled around under the lamp for his Everlife pills. He was a hundred and eight years old” (Clayton 4). To sum up, Mal Gorman’s physical appearance is disturbing and frightening. The Wall, which divides the humans from the animals, had a top class security level. Primarily, The Wall itself was secure. As Emma Clayton stated, “The Wall was the largest man-made structure on the planet. It towered fifty feet above the sea level and looped all around the top of the world, enclosing Northern Europe, Northern Russia, and Canada. The Wall’s foundations met bedrock so no burrowing animals could get under it. And on the top were three rows of electrified razor wire that would cut a rhino into ribbons” (Clayton 10). In addition to that, there were guards who protected it that carried advanced weapons with them. As the author wrote, “Every seventy-five feet were guard towers manned by Ghengis borgs: ten-foot-tall battle borgs with temperaments like wasps and laser guns powerful enough to blow a herd of elephants to biltong” (Clayton 10). All in all, The Wall was the world’s largest, yet best-guarded wall in the whole world.Friday, November 7, 2014The encounter between Ellie and the soldiers of Mal Gorman is extremely intense. After Ellie absconded from Mal Gorman’s spaceship, and reached London, Mal Gorman’s soldiers were expecting her. Straightforwardly, the soldiers starting pursuing Ellie. Ellie had to confirm that the soldiers did not achieve complete sight of her, so they could not target and discharge at her. She apprehended them off for several minutes. Furthermore, Ellie deceived the soldiers with an unanticipated move. All of a sudden, “She stopped dead and the men were taken by surprise and overshot her” (Clayton 18). She moved out of the way and both of the two soldiers collided and produced an explosion that burned Gorman’s retinas, broke the glass, and propelled Gorman back on his bed. All in all, Ellie escaped in the Shadows by a hazardous battle versus the men of Gorman.Ellie has a boundless affection for her companion and pet, Puck, the monkey. Ellie felt miserable for Puck. Ellie stated, “She knew Puck missed his family just as much as she did hers, and the only way he could communicate his sadness was by being vicious and destructive” (Clayton 12). Ellie correspondingly describes Puck as special and lovely. As Ellie said, “What a miracle he was. So beautiful. Every time she looked at him she felt her heart swell with wonder. His brown face was framed by a mist of golden fur” (Clayton 12). In conclusion Ellie adores Puck a lot, yet she also feels dismal for him as he misses his family.Ellie recalls numerous memories with her brother, which relates to what she saw or felt. For instance, she saw the second level on London and reminisced a memory with her brother. Ellie remembered that when she was six, she was sitting with her brother, while watching the prime minister announce the building of the second level on London. Additionally, another memory she recalled of her brother is when she was in the Pod Fighter and falling, she thought of Mika and how much they used to argue. She remembered how they always used to fight on who would sleep on the top bed. They could argue from dawn to dusk if their parents didn’t make punishments when they argued. To sum up, Ellie mostly has memories of her brother whenever she sees or feels something that relates to him, and illustrates her love for him.Friday, November 14, 2014Mika displays a telepathic connection with his sister, Ellie. For instance, Ellie was in danger as Mal Gorman’s soldiers are unremittingly pursuing her when all of a sudden, Mika woke up like he experienced what his sister was going through. As the author stated, “As Ellie was fighting for her life around the Golden Turrets of London, Mika awoke, instantly alert, with his heart banging in his chest. He sat up in the darkness wondering if he’d been dreaming about her, but he couldn’t remember” (Clayton 26). Furthermore, when Ellie actually crashed, he felt pain and his mother had to call ambulance. As the author wrote, “No, Mike said quietly, tears pressing in his eyes. It’s you that’s wrong. She’s not dead. I can feel her. He felt her more than he knew. As Ellie’s Pod Fighter was shot down and fell into the dark water of the Shadows, he felt as if he’d received a crushing blow to his chest” (Clayton 30). All in all, eccentrically Mika had the power to telepathically sense what his sister suffered.Mal Gorman didn’t want to admit he’d made such stupid mistakes when he went down to The Shadows in order to see verification that both Ellie and Puck were dead. First of all, Mal Gorman felt that he had underestimated Ellie’s abilities. Ellie was amazing, powerful, and strange. Secondly, Mal Gorman was annoyed by the death of Ellie. As the author said, “He felt as if he’d dropped a Ming vase and was looking at the pieces on the floor around his feet” (Clayton 32). In conclusion, Mal Gorman could not accept the fact that Ellie was dead since she was exceptionally talented.Even though The Wall was protecting the human race from the plague of the animals, it also isolated them. First of all, The Wall made the human race contain limited space. As the author stated, “The entire population of the planet was now squashed into a third of the space to escape from the animals, and every acre of land had been built on” (Clayton 34). Moreover, they don’t have space to grow crops. As the author wrote, “There were no fields anymore, no woods or parks or gardens. There were no space for anything but concrete and people” (Clayton 34). To sum up, even though The Wall might be protecting the humans from the animal plague, it is also harming them excessively. This was a pretty good YA sci-fi book. It has family, gaming, competition, friendship, bullying, having to cower to adult authority, as well as the dystopian future atmosphere. The characters and their relationships are well developed, and the story moves along nicely enough. The ending seemed rushed. Not only that, but the "secret" and its explanation left me a bit dismayed, like.... WHAAAT?! For that, I can't give more than two stars.
