About book Las Tejedoras De Destinos (2013)

There are a lot of paranormal YA stories out there and to find a unique paranormal world is rare so I consider this book a real gem. Thus it pains me to write that even though I absolutely loved the world set in this story, I can’t say that I loved the story itself. My main issue is that the story’s conflict is driven by the main character’s poor choices. She is continually warned not to make waves, to the point that the life of a beloved family member is dependent upon her good behavior but instead of internalizing her thoughts, she repeatedly vocalizes snarky and challenging remarks to her enemies. It doesn’t make her character likeable that she chooses to zing one-liners over any sense of self-preservation. Readers have to be reminded repeatedly that if she didn’t have certain paranormal skills, she would have been killed for her actions.Bummer. I want to like this book, I do. I just don't. The universe and it's mechanisms are very creative and interesting. The government, a la 1984 with a strong stroke of female suppression, seems nicely complex. The characters, however, are cardboard cutouts resembling interesting people. No, that's not a story mechanic. The characters are written flatly and are boringly obvious in every way.The lead female character has some sort of deathwish, or is intolerably stupid, running her mouth at the worst opportunities in order to piss off people more than willing to kill her. Yet, these actions are counter to her goals, and in direct opposition to the two gorgeous automatons vying for her attention, though it could get either of them likewise killed. The people close to her, that like her, adore her, and risk their own lives for her. The people that don't like her, hate her on the merest pretense. It's, tiresome. If she feels like rewriting this book in a few years, when she's gotten the hang of writing believable people, I would love to read it again. The world is interesting. She has a real knack for weaving (hehe) an interesting and colorful backdrop of a world. I just can't stand the flatness of the characters. I already have the sequel, since it's free on the Wattpad app, but I haven't decided if I'm going to read it. I'm interested to see where the world goes, but really don't want to travel there with these characters. :/
