The emotional upheaval...Fantastically written, unlike any other historical romance I've read. Very real and I don't mean that there was a lot of historical accuracy but that the characters and their hopes and fear were all quite empathetic. I've gone through the whole of the human emotional spectrum reading this book from bawling-my-eyes-out melancholy to sharp sparks of lust to the deep emptiness of loneliness to the molten rage of inequality to soaring happiness, this book has been a trip. I'll have to look into other books from Ms. Milan they are well worth the read 4.5 This girl really sticks to her guns and I am beyond pleased with the heroine Courtney Milan has created. She is brash, unapologetic, and fiercely loyal to her sister, qualities that more of our female leads should have these days. Jane is probably my favorite character in the story with her wild ways, but her sister's romance as a side plot was just as riveting. The secondary character era, such as Jane's friends, added an extra level of fun that I thoroughly enjoyed.
