About book La Princesse Au Petit Pois (2013)

My first Eloisa James book and... It was ok. To be honest, I was expecting a lot more, possibly because Ms.James is such a big name in the historical romance genre. I felt that the romance between the two main characters, Quin and Olivia was a bit too forced, the ending was a bit too neat for my taste and I really felt sorry for poor Georgiana, who seemed to have been thrown into the novel for no other reason than to add guilt to our heroines frivolous take on life, as if to prove that, yes she is in fact more than a large women with big breasts. She cares about people too!I had no sympathy whatsoever for Olivia, I found her quite annoying in fact, and for the first time ever, I found myself hoping that the other, lesser character would get the guy, if just to prevent her from doing so.I did have some laugh out moments. Ms. James does have a great sense of humour, often lacking from this type of book... but unfortunately, that did not help me overcome my over all disinterest in the story of her heroine..2.5 stars First off, I love the idea of gently retelling classic fairy tales and have been delighted to find this series! Like the other books, this one is well written, very witty, and I enjoyed the banter between the characters. But, like other reviewers have said, I had issues with the way other characters treated Rupert. Yes, he winds up being a hero and he inspires incredibly loyalty from his friends and subordinates, but he is constantly the but of jokes and a source of anxiety for the heroine. As the parent of an Autistic child, I had a difficult time reading this. IF you can get past that point, the rest of the book is a mostly fun romp - though, yes, the ending is quite over the top, but I guess the author had to work in a stack of mattresses somehow! Like in the other books, yes, the sensibilities and phrasing of the characters is entirely modern, but, overall, I recommend it and am looking forward to reading the rest of this series.

It started really good, but the last 30% pissed me off enough to reduce the book to 2 stars.
