Many lives feel up-ended between the ages of 13 and 16, but for twins Noah and Jude, so, so much happens. He shifts from being the weird one to seeming so average; her badass surfing self disappears into baggy clothes and weird superstitions. In alternating sections, we live through life-changing events with them. Noah tells us about what happened when they were 13,14; and Jude about 16. Love, art, ghosts, family. This takes a while to engage a reader. It is high end YA fiction and reads like an adult novel with teen characters. There is a lot of YA fiction with art or artist plots or themes in 2014 which I find interesting. The story has a back and forth point of views in different time periods between the two main characters, Jude and her brother Noah. There is a lot here -death of a parent, divorce, gay characters and ghosts. Ghosts are another big literary device this year in YA. I think this is a prize book and it has been appearing on a lot of the best of the best lists. I wonder if it will have teen appeal.
